Newsletter: October & November 2024

The Darshak is the newsletter of the IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF), dedicated to advancing Positioning and Precision Technologies (PPTs) such as remote sensing, GIS, GNSS and other non-invasive technologies. These technologies are crucial for analyzing and managing spatial and temporal data, aiding decision-making in sectors like agriculture, natural resource management, and disaster management. The hub also explores new frontiers in indoor positioning, timing and underwater navigation technologies

 

This newsletter covers our activities for October & November 2024. We will issue another newsletter for December 2024, thereafter, we hope to release The Darshak every quarter.

 

IITTNiF fosters innovation through a comprehensive technology lifecycle approach encompassing Knowledge, Development, Translation, and Commercialization. By aligning with initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, the TIH aims to enhance self-reliance in PPTs and contribute to the national startup ecosystem.

 

The National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) under the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, leverages CPS technologies through 25 TIHs across India, each focused on a specific technology vertical.

 

Incorporated in December 2020, as a Section 8 company under IIT Tirupati, this Hub is fortunate to be located within the impressive IIT Tirupati campus and enjoys full support from IIT Tirupati, including guidance and leadership from the Director of IIT Tirupati and the Hub Governing Body. The leadership team also includes the Project Director, Dr. Roshan K Srivastav, Associate Professor at IIT Tirupati, and the CEO, Major General M. Rajendran (Retd.), who leads a vibrant and energetic team called Team Navavishkar.

 

The Board of Directors at IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF) includes distinguished individuals such as Prof. K. N. Satyanarayana, the Director of IIT Tirupati; Dr. E. Anil Kumar, the Dean SRC at IIT Tirupati; Dr. Ajit T. Kalghatgi, a Non-Executive Director at Antrix Corporation Limited; Maj. Gen. Dr. R. Siva Kumar (Retd.), the Director Emeritus at Open Geospatial Consortium; Dr. Y. V. N. Krishna Murthy, an Academic Representative from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology; and Dr. Roshan K. Srivastav, Associate Professor at IIT Tirupati in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. These experts collectively drive the foundation’s mission of innovation and growth in the PPT sector.

 

IITTNiF leverages public-private partnerships to foster innovation and support sustainable growth through advanced technologies under the verticals of Technology Development, Startups and Entrepreneurship, Human Resource and Skill Development, and Collaborations.

 

 

Highlights of this Newsletter

Technology Development Projects

The ongoing Technology Development projects have shown significant progress in this quarter leading to newer dimensions in translational research.

 

1. RF Front-end Technologies for multi-constellation GNSS Systems, SASTRA Deemed University

3x3 Power Divider for GNSS L1-Band

A novel 9 element power divider for operation of GNSS L1 band has been designed. The results show significant power divider performance, further stages of the design include fabrication and integration with antenna and other RF front end components.

 

2. Design of Hyperspectral camera for remote sensing - Karunya University

 

Image Capture Testing of Hyperspectral Camera

The development of hyperspectral camera has evolved the stage of capturing basic RGB images. Various image capture testings are being performed at the stage. Further advancements include the design of CMOS sensor and fabrication to capture the hyperspectral cube which will be used for remote sensing applications.

 

3. Design of Development of a Transportable all-optical trapped ion atomic clock for  PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing) Applications - IIT Tirupati

Simulation of Dual-axis atomic clock with results

Dual-axis ultra-stable cavity for portable trapped ion-based all-optical atomic clocks is being developed currently as a simulation study and characteristics. The results depict cubic cavities with different sizes. Further goal is to optimize the cutout depth to achieve zero length instability, thus ensuring high-frequency stability, a critical factor in the performance of optical atomic clocks.

 

Technology Development Project Proposals - 4th Edition 2024

 

The 4th Edition call for Technology Development Projects received 72 proposals in the month of May 2024. After a subsequent scrutiny process, 20 projects have been accepted tuning to a budget of Rs. 6.08 Crores. The project domains include GNSS, Indoor Navigation, Underwater Navigation and other fields related to Positioning, Navigation and Timing Applications.

Human Resource Development

We are excited to launch the next phase of the IITTNiF CHANAKYA UG-PG Fellowship program next month. In this phase, 14 UG student groups (a total of 23 fellows) and 3 PG fellows have been selected. These young PPT enthusiasts, coming from diverse academic backgrounds will work on 17 state-of-the-art projects in various fields like LLM for Geospatial data retrieval, Integration of GPS with IoT for Precision Agriculture, SDR-based FMCW Transceiver, Interactive OpenSource GIS-Based Tourist Information System for Local Self Government, Flood Risk Mapping, Urban Heat Island Effect Analysis etc. for the next 6 months.  Research works will be carried out at respective home institutes with monthly evaluation by IITTNiF.

 

Skill Development Program

Under the VIDYA GIS initiative, IITTNiF continues to nurture spatial thinking and spread awareness through hands-on training programs on Geographic Information Systems (GIS)  among school and college students. Many institutes from all over the country have registered with us voicing strong interest in our workshops. Currently, we are working on implementing an advanced plan of action which includes collaborating with premium organizations to increase our outreach manifold. We are also concentrating on designing training programs for various other sectors like farmers, law enforcement authorities, the tourism department, initiatives for women's safety, and many more.

Workshop cum Hands-on Training: "Empowering Incubators: Mastering Global Success & Sustainability"

In collaboration with the AP Innovation Society, PUM, and aHub, this transformative workshop took place on October 1st, 2024, at AP Innovation Valley, Visakhapatnam. The event brought together industry experts, incubator leaders, and innovators to focus on strategies for achieving global success and fostering long-term sustainability. Maj Gen Rajendran (Retd.), our CEO, had the honor of being invited to and delivered a talk on “Geospatial Opportunities at the Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Tirupati”, furthering collaborations aimed at bolstering the growth of geospatial technology in India's innovation landscape.

Successful Launch of Operation Dronagiri! A Giant Leap for India’s Geospatial Future!

We are excited to announce the successful launch of Operation Dronagiri, a national pilot project under the National Geospatial Policy 2022, held at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on November 13, 2024.

What is Operation Dronagiri?

A strategic mission designed to position India as a global leader in geospatial innovation, with a focus on:

Grand Challenge through Geospatial Innovation Accelerators

 

Operation Dronagiri features a Grand Challenge implemented through Geospatial Innovation Accelerators (GIAs) to drive local solutions in selected districts.

Each GIA, in collaboration with the GDPDC Secretariat, DST-NGP, and Survey of India, leverages regional expertise to achieve program objectives. The GIAs include:

  • AWaDH, IIT Ropar in Gurugram & Sonipat, Haryana

  • FIRST, IIT Kanpur in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

  • Innovation Park, IIM Calcutta in Kamrup, Assam

Collaborations

Geospatial Innovation Accelerator (GIA) Agreement Signed

 

In October 2024, the Geospatial Innovation Accelerator (GIA) Agreement was successfully formalized, marking a key milestone for Operation Dronagiri. This agreement establishes a collaborative framework between IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF), as the Nodal GIA, and the five GIAs across the country to drive geospatial innovation and solutions.

 

The GIA Agreement defines the roles and responsibilities of each partner, focusing on startup mentorship, resource facilitation, and the local implementation of the Accelerator Program. It ensures coordinated efforts among GIAs to identify and support early- and growth-stage startups, enabling the development of geospatial solutions to address critical challenges in agriculture, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

 

With the agreement in place, GIAs are equipped to provide technical guidance, connect startups with mentors, and facilitate collaborations with corporate partners and government agencies. The Nodal GIA, IITTNiF, will oversee the implementation, ensuring alignment with Operation Dronagiri's goals and fostering the sharing of best practices among GIAs.

We are delighted to announce a major milestone in advancing drone technology in Andhra Pradesh! At the Amaravati Drone Summit 2024, a Tripartite Agreement was signed between IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF), AP Drone Corporation, and IIT Tirupati. This collaboration aims to drive cutting-edge research, development, and deployment of drone solutions to tackle pressing challenges in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and public safety.

Greetings from IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I Hub Foundation!

 

As we forge ahead in our mission, I am pleased to share the latest updates and exciting developments at our foundation.

This month, we rededicate our efforts to translational research and development, inspired by the insights from TIPS 5.0 by DST at IISc Bengaluru. We are expediting the establishment of the NAVIC/GNSS lab at IITTNIF, which will significantly enhance our capabilities in geospatial technologies.

 

We have recently signed an MoU with AP Drone Corporation, opening new avenues for collaboration and innovation. This partnership will enable us to explore and pursue numerous opportunities in drone technology and its applications.

 

Operation Dronagiri continues to make remarkable strides as the Nodal GIA, aiming to achieve the ambitious goals set by GDPDC and GIC, DST. This initiative is pivotal in advancing our objectives and contributing to the broader technological landscape.

 

Our Skill Development Programme through VIDYA GIS, a brian child of our Esteemed PD, is another cornerstone of our efforts. This programme is designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in geospatial technology and related fields.

 

Moreover, we are focused on capacity building to empower the PD Office, ensuring that our projects are managed with the highest standards of excellence and efficiency.
